Activity: Sustainable Cities Prototype (Role Play/Simulation)

Objective: Reflect on cross-functional collaboration and resource management.

Phase 1: Reflection (What happened?)

Goal: Establish a shared narrative of the activity.

• “In one word, how would you describe your team’s energy when the ‘budget cut’ was announced?”
• “What was the single most difficult decision your group had to make today?”
• “Who took on a role they didn’t expect to have?”

Phase 2: Analysis (Why it happened?)

Goal: Connect experiences to theoretical learning objectives.

• “Why did some teams pivot faster than others? What communication patterns did you observe?”
• “How did the scarcity of ‘building permits’ affect your willingness to help other groups?”
• “What specific skill from our lectures did you find most useful—or most missing—during the simulation?”

Phase 3: Application (What next?)

Goal: Translate insights into future professional or academic behavior.

• “If we ran this again tomorrow, what is the first thing you would change in your team’s workflow?”
• “How does this simulation reflect the real-world tensions between urban planning and environmental science?”

Facilitator Control Layer

Opening Script: “Take a deep breath. The ‘Sustain-a-City’ simulation is now closed. We are shifting from ‘doing’ to ‘thinking’. For the next 10 minutes, there are no wrong answers—only observations.”

Transition Line: “We’ve looked at what happened. Now, let’s peel back the layers. Why did your team react that way?”
